Layhead Walks - Three Short Walks from Layhead Farm Cottages - 30 to 60 minutes

These short walks are around Layhead Farm. They can involve climbing over stiles in walls, opening gates and walking in Layhead Farm fields. Please wear suitable clothing and waterproof footwear. If there are no animals in the fields you are welcome to exercise your dog off the lead, but if otherwise, please keep your dog on the lead. Please fasten all gates and pick up dog mess. There are bins at the end of Watery Lane at the entrance to the Caravan Site.

Walks

Walk 1

From the cottages; turn right and follow the lane to main road. Turn right and follow road to Rathmell Beck bridge. Go through gate on right into Layhead Farm fields. Follow the Rathmell Beck through 3 fields until you meet the wood. Stay in field and follow the edge of the wood until you reach a gate which opens into the lane. Go through the gate and follow the lane to the right and return to the cottages by the laundry.

Walk 2

From the cottages turn left up the lane. At T junction turn left and follow the lane through metal gate and down the hill past the pack horse bridge until you meet a metal gate across the lane. On the right there is a gate into Layhead Farm fields. Go through and walk along the Rathmell Beck side intil you meet a stile in the wall. Look over the wall into the wood at Springtime for bluebells and ferns. Follow the wall up the hill and turn right at the top following the line of the wall until you reach a stile marked with white paint. Go over into Watery Lane and turn right and follow it to the Back Lane near the entrance to Caravan Site. Go through gate, turn left to return home.

Walk 3

From the cottages, turn left and walk to T junction. Turn right through small gate, follow Watery Lane (bridlepath) until it ends and meets a sharp bend in the road. Turn right up a steep hill and follow the road until you meet the school. There are beautiful views across to Malhamdale and Pen-y-Ghent on this stretch. Opposite the school, on the right, there is a stile on the Ribble Way. Go over to field and walk in a straight line to another stile and field. Over another stile to Watery Lane. Turn left and walk to a small gate by entrance to Caravan park. Go through the gate and turn left to return home.
